Stock Picking Expert: GoMaxGo

Gomaxgo’s “Risky Business” Portfolio

gomaxgo

My expert portfolio is meant to be a game-winner, not a 401k strategy. Risky, volatile stocks, usually from the same industry, that can thrust you into a competitive position—or send you into a tailspin.

“Expert”….that’s a heady title. Especially since I’ve never purchased a stock in my life. I’m honored to be here, alongside a real expert like Peter Navarro. It’s important for Survivors to understand that there are essentially two ways to play this game. One is to learn the market and gain experience in preparation for real-world trading. The other is to go after prizes. They involve completely different strategies. Peter represents the first approach; I’m the second. If I’m an expert at anything, it’s playing stock-market contests, not the stock market itself.

But shouldn’t this be the same thing? Why not just use the same strategies with real stocks? Some day, when I have a bit more disposable time, I’d like to give it a try. But I also realize that these two don’t equate. Real-world trading involves taxes, commissions, and, most importantly, real money on the line. The difference in behavior between a simulation and the real thing cannot be underestimated.

As WSS has made it easy for people to invest in the same stocks that I’ve chosen here, I’ll offer a warning to any takers: be prepared for a roller-coaster ride. I like to go with stocks that are moving, sometimes wildly. The result can be rewarding or humiliating. At this contest, you really have everything to gain and nothing to lose. But whether you play my way or Peter’s, you can’t help but learn tremendously about the market–and that’s an enormously valuable benefit.

what does “short” mean for a newby like me

france, technically it involves selling shares of stocks that you don’t own, and then “covering” by buying them back, hopefully at a lower price. But all you need to know is that shorting acts like the opposite of buying a stock…you are betting that its share price will fall.

Mr. Halverson,

I am a reporter for Canwest - a Canadian national newspaper chain. I am writing a story for a special Online Trading section about online market simulation games. When I spoke to Montreal-based Stock-Trak, I asked if it would be possible to speak to an enthusiastic online market simulation player, and they suggested I contact you.

Please let me know if you would be interested a short interview of about 10 minutes’ duration on Wednesday or Thursday of this week to discuss that topic, and if so, a time and number it would be convenient to reach you at.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
Jeff Buckstein

hi there, i just got started at this in the third week of Oct. One of my portfolios ended up ranked 112 for the month, the other 121 for the last week of this month. Am I doing really well or is this simply some beginner’s luck?

I agree with Mark…the news is where I find most of my ideas, typically more so than the charts. Staying on top of headlines can be very helpful in piecing together the puzzle of where the market may move next.

Can these portfolios be updated ? … I know I cant say to match THESE TIMES… SIGH… but its a nice feature to offer players and why not promote GoMaxGo & Mr Navarro? Thank you for reading,

aliasannie, thanks for your message. WSS told me they will get back to updating these portfolios after rolling out a new CMS that will show these picks as they’re made, rather than being posted once a week, which had been the case. That’ll make this feature of more value to the community, so I’m looking forward to the upgrade. I’m kinda glad my recent picks weren’t posted…my portfolio may be in need of a bailout!
