Level II Options

Written by Ryan Hops

With the successful launch of level I options, Wall Street Survivor is proud to announce that level II options trading is on its way. Level II options are a more advanced type of option play that allows traders to add hedges to their investments and diversification to their portfolio. Currently, Wall Street Survivor allows traders to simply buy and sell call options and puts. However, with level II options, traders will be able to take their skills to the next level.

Level II options at Wall Street Survivor will permit traders to write covered and naked calls and puts in additions to buying and selling them. This basically means you will be able to write your own calls and puts backed by underlying stocks that you have in your portfolio, or on margin. This will greatly enhance the types of plays you can make with options and we encourage you to try them all out at Wall Street Survivor before testing them out there in the real world. We will have options articles, tips and lessons for you at Survivor U, so be sure to do your homework first!

We are extremely excited about getting level II options up and running and are anxious for you to try them out and to hear how your experiences are. Feel free to use this post to discuss anything level II option related with us, including lessons you would like us to publish. We will do our best to get back to all of you.

Yesterday’s Best Trades?

Written by Mark Berger

On Monday, Dec. 15th, the best trades in the Community were ridiculous.

We tracked down the cause of these enormous profits and found that NASDAQ created a testing trading symbol (AAZST) that was not representative of any company. It is was ficticious. It didn’t exist. Still, many savvy Survivors tried to take advantage of this situation which allowed them to make the huge profits. Luckily, our audit team was on the case immediately and adjusted the portfolios of the following Survivors:

As you can see, the audit team cancelled all trades associated with the ticker symbol AAZST which dramatically reduced the values for several Survivors which was the only fair action to take.

Expert Stock Picks

Written by Mark Berger

Many Newbie Survivors understand about stocks and the stock market but don’t have any idea of how to find stocks to trade.

As one Survivor, brainiac, wrote on her Blog:

I signed up for the “fantasy stock market” and perused the pages of Google finance. And I have no idea what to do with all of that information! There’s a big search window to “get quotes,” but what am I getting quotes for? I understand the idea of buying and selling shares, but that represents the entire body of my knowledge on the subject. How do I figure out what companies I want quotes for?

So, we have Starter Stock portfolios for anyone who signs up (TIP: they are also available if you reset your portfolio).

OK, then you’ve got about 10 stocks picked by someone. But then what to do?

That’s when we came up with the idea of Expert Portfolio picks! We are going to replace the “Balanced” “Conservative” and “Agressive” starter Portfolios with Portfolios created by some real stock picking experts. One of them we hope will be Peter Navarro, who is an Economics Professor at UC-Irvine and is Harvard educated.

And those experts will then update their picks every week, so that you can get some guidance, some new stock trading ideas and start to understand why these picks are getting made.

Expect this to be on the site in about 2-4 weeks.

Maximum Shares to Buy

Written by Mark Berger

According to the Wall Street Survivor contest rules, players may not hold a single position that is worth more than $25,000. This creates often annoying error messages on the trade page when you attempt to buy more than the $25k limit rule.

So, some smart Survivors suggested that we build a handy-dandy little button called “Max. Shares” that in one click provides the maximum number of shares you can buy for that security. How about that for progress!

We hope to have this ready in June with a more streamlined trade page. See the mock-up below:
